Why You Should Get Real-World Experience as a Civil Engineering Intern
In almost every career field, internships are a way to gain experience and insight into the industry, and it’s no different in civil engineering. We are excited to be accepting applications for our 2022 paid summer internships in multiple offices. Here’s what it’s like to intern with us.
Kaw Valley Engineering provides a paid summer internship program for high school seniors and college students interested in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry. The internship program is well-suited for students who would like to gain real-world, hands-on experience.
Our interns have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in construction materials testing, surveying, drafting and civil design. They are mentored by senior engineers and work with other leaders within their specified office location. This program includes construction site visits, educational seminars and company social events.
Weston Boyer worked part-time as an Intern in our Junction City office since May 2019. He majored in Civil Engineering at Kansas State University and returned post-graduation this summer as an Engineer in Training.
Our focus for our interns is to provide a learning experience where they will obtain real-world knowledge that will help them to understand the theories and methods that they are being taught in their course of study.
Weston said the field and lab experience in materials testing helped tie together classes at Kansas State and create a better understanding of the civil engineering industry.
“Seeing that really helped me understand the science behind what I was learning at school,” he said.
We’re proud that our offices have a small-town feel, but with big city capabilities. If you intern with us, you will make connections with the surveying and drafting, engineering, and materials testing departments in the office.
“Everybody there’s really friendly; they want to see you succeed,” Weston said. “They’re there for you and it was great working during school.”
Interns will benefit from our experienced team, diverse workloads and clientele, and unparalleled mentoring. Our family environment and flexible work schedule promote a work-life balance that larger firms often fail to emulate. A past intern explains how an internship at Kaw Valley Engineering helped open their eyes to the AEC industry.
“This internship was a window into my future career as a Civil Engineer,” the intern said. “I learned a lot about the process of completing a project, and that was invaluable for me. Seeing how projects passed through different people was a huge eye opener for how real-world engineering works.”
Overall, we’re happy to provide a unique experience to our interns that make civil engineering coursework more understandable and provide the possibility for real-world experience in materials testing, civil design, surveying and more.
“It was a great experience,” Weston said. “The lab really did open my understanding to a lot of things. It helped me understand the design process.”
